| Scholarships or student grants program description |
This is an opportunity to join a large multidisciplinary group working on applications of inkjet printing in graphics, rapid prototyping and bioengineering. The project is to work with a consortium of universities and a number of UK based companies, who are working together to understand the fundamental scientific principles that underlie inkjet printing.
Inkjet printing, whether used for traditional graphics applications or for manufacturing applications, has its spatial resolution determined by the interactions of printed droplets both with the substrate and with previously deposited droplets. This interaction is complicated by the drying/solidification process of a drop spread to equilibrium and the change in interfacial interactions that occur during the drying process. This project will explore the fundamental physical and chemical processes that control the interaction of drying drops with substrates and adjacent drops. Simple mechanical models of droplet shape will be studied and their validity investigated through a programme of experimentation.
