| Scholarships or student grants program description |
The British Library Scholarships arise from the special relationship the University has with the British Library, as signalled by the existence of an agreement between the two institutions. As a consequence, it is a key requirement of the scheme that successful students be jointly supervised by staff at Sheffield and the British Library (with the Sheffield supervisor acting as the lead supervisor).
Each Scholarship offers UK/EU tuition fees, a maintenance stipend (£13,290 in 2009-10) and a Research Training Support Grant (£500 per annum).
The following Scholarships are available for entry in 2009-10:
'Mapping Palestine: Cartography of Palestine in the Nineteenth Century'
Department of Biblical Studies
Supervisors: Professor Keith Whitelam, Biblical Studies; Peter Barber, British Library
'Voice into Text: Case Studies in the History of Linguistic Transcription' *
School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics
Supervisors: Dr Richard Steadman-Jones, English Language and Linguistics; Adrian Edwards, British Library
* Note: Dr Steadman-Jones is away from the University in August 2009. Applications would therefore be preferred before 8 July 2009. If you are interested in applying for this studentship but are unable to make this earlier deadline, please email Dr Steadman-Jones.
Eligibility
These awards are available to applicants who will register with the University in 2009-10 on a full-time programme of study leading to the degree of PhD. Each award is tenable for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
The awards are open to UK, EU and international applicants. International applicants are only eligible providing that they can demonstrate that they have sufficient alternative funding to cover the difference between the UK and international students tuition fee for a period of three years.
