| Scholarships or student grants program description |
The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) fund a small number of interdisciplinary research studentships jointly each year. The subject matter of the studentships must address the interests of both the ESRC and the NERC (see below) and must be genuinely interdisciplinary in approach. Applicants should ensure that their proposal engages with the ESRC's Thematic Priorities and the NERC's strategic priorities.
The NERC will be administering the 2009 competition. The studentships are allocated on the basis of an open competition, but applicants must still submit their application via their school and not directly to the NERC. The guidance notes and application form for the 2009 competition will be available for download in due course.
ESRC interests: The ESRC focuses on six research areas: economic affairs, education and human development, environment and planning, government and law, industry and employment, and social affairs.
NERC interests: The NERC funds postgraduate research and training in the environmental sciences, including atmospheric, earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences.
Funding
The terms and conditions of NERC/ESRC studentships will be similar to those for current research studentships (UK/EU Fees and an annual stipend of £13,290), but with an annual stipend £2,000 in excess of a standard NERC or ESRC studentship.
Eligibility
Academic Criteria: Applicants must be a graduate of a recognised university with a 2:1 (with honours) degree, or a 2:2 and a Master's qualification.
Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to UK Nationals, and EU students who can satisfy UK residency requirements.
To be eligible for the full award, UK and EU Nationals must have been in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course for which they are seeking funding, including for the purposes of full-time education.
EU Nationals who do not meet the above residency requirement are eligible for a fees-only award, provided that they have been ordinarily resident in the EU for at least 3 years prior to the start of the course.
