Scholarships or student grants program description
This fund has been established through the generosity of various benefactors and with the support of the University Music Society. Value. The grant will pay up to half of the cost of the normal set of half-hour lessons throughout the session. Eligibility. Any matriculated student of the University of St Andrews who is also a Registered User of the Music Centre may apply. Success in a previous year does not disqualify a student from applying. Criteria. The `Hebdomadar's Music Fund' is so-called because its primary aim is to help students who could not otherwise afford to have music lessons, or to have as many lessons as they would like -- and the Hebdomadar was, until recently, the Officer who administered financial aid for students. The students to whom preference will be given are those who seem likely to make good use of the lessons in terms of their own musical development and their contribution to the musical life of the University. Students of all abilities are welcome to apply. Note. Students applying for Music Scholarships (those awarded on merit) may also apply to the Hebdomadar's Fund, but those who are awarded scholarships (which are decided first) will not be considered further. Procedure. Application forms are available from the Music Centre. A short-list will be drawn up and all candidates informed as soon as possible. Those who are short-listed should then come to the Centre to arrange an assessment lesson with an appropriate teacher, who will provide a recommendation to the selection committee. Those accepted for support will have the assessment lesson counted as one of their lessons in the first block. Unsuccessful applicants will be charged the full cost of the assessment lesson and any other lessons received, but may withdraw from continuing the block of lessons. Review. The teacher and his or her student will be asked independently to to review progress at the end of each semester. If the first review shows that the student's progress or attendance is unsatisfactory then the grant wil not be continued into the second semester. If the reports are unsatifactory at the end of the second semester, then no further grant will be considered from that student.
