What is the Community Service Scholarship?
The Community Service Scholarship is a $40,000 scholarship over four years ($10,000 per year) awarded to students based on past and current participation in community service. Our goal is to award this scholarship to students with a passion for community service with the hope that they will make a positive impact on the St. Lawrence and local communities while in college.
As an institution, St. Lawrence has made a strong commitment to maintaining a productive relationship with the surrounding community and continually encourages students to take an active role in fostering this relationship. Additionally, St. Lawrence students prepare for the responsibility of serving their community, country and world after graduation.
Please note: Community Service Scholars who enrolled prior to fall 2010 receive $7,500 per year.
Who is named a Community Service Scholar?
Any student of U.S. and/or Canadian citizenship, who is applying as a first-year or transfer student is eligible to apply for the Community Service Scholarship.
Because we expect Community Service Scholars to be leaders in service at St. Lawrence, we look for students who have shown initiative and leadership in their community service work. Community Service Scholars include students who have created new service projects in their schools and hometowns, students who have motivated their peers to be involved in worthwhile projects, and students who have made community service a top priority relevant to other activities in which they have been involved.
How many students are selected as Community Service Scholars?
In recent years we have received between 130-160 applications for the Community Service Scholarship. Typically 25-35 of these students are named Community Service Scholars.
How to Apply:
Students interested in applying for the Community Service Scholarship must submit a complete St. Lawrence application (Common Application) by February 1.
In addition, you are required to submit a resume of your community service involvement (please provide as much detail as possible, including description of project, your role in the project, hours served, duration of project, etc.) and an essay which identifies and describes which criterion you meet (listed below).
* Initiation of a significant service project in your hometown or school community.
* Motivating peers to participate in service in new or expanded ways.
* Making community service a top priority in how you spend your discretionary time.
This information must also be submitted by February 1.
