The Aquinas Advantage :

5 Great Reasons to MakeAquinas College Your College 1. We take a personal interest in each student.

Small in size, and yet big in vision, the students at Aquinas are known as individuals and offered opportunities that are beyond the mass production of larger schools. The student teacher ratio and the family atmosphere supports the entire student body and significantly enhances their educational experience.

2. We are concerned with the whole person.

To say that Aquinas College is a Catholic school is to understand faith as light and not as restriction. This light is shed on all areas of the curriculum but not in a way that is unnatural, superimposed or intolerant of other beliefs. Faith and reason are not in opposition but in actuality they are considered complementary aspects of reality.

3. Aquinas College is committed to truth, beauty and goodness.

The foundation of a liberal arts education is more than just a preparation for a career, but truly a preparation for life. Appreciation for that which is truly beautiful takes cultivation and not just exposure. Recognizing truth requires that one actually learn how to learn. Much has been said about life in the information age, but what truly makes us human is our ability to consider information according to rational principles. Appreciation for that which is truth and beautiful prepares us for attraction to that which is truly good. When goodness is fully embraced, we find true happiness.

4. Aquinas College is specialized in preparing people for careers in nursing, education and business.

Aquinas College students enter the workforce with an outstanding preparation for careers in service.
Our nurses have long had the reputation for the rigor and thoroughness of this preparation but they also have an understanding for the dignity of the human person that sets them apart from their peers. This same sense of reverence and attitude of service affects the education students who come to Aquinas for more than just certification. They have a broad range of preparation that is practical, hands-on and personal. They are given the best of contemporary educational trends but remain rooted in what is tried and true.
Our business students understand the complexity of the market place but are guided by the principles of ethics that see success beyond the accumulation of wealth. With a broad range of professors active in various sectors of the business world, they emerge well-rounded and highly recommended.

5. Aquinas College is focused.

Aquinas College is owned and operated by the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia Congregation. Their spirit of joyfulness, unity, and dedication to education permeates campus life and the curriculum. There is a unique sense of camaraderie and vision that unifies the faculty and staff, where at most colleges professors are focused within departments or in some cases moving in multiple directions.
The faculty at Aquinas believe in the mission of the college and share a deep commitment to her students. They clearly love to teach, as well as to learn. Each year the faculty and staff undertakes a group study where they share insights and attend workshops on the subject. What results is an understanding, not just of their individual subject area but of the big picture we are seeking to deliver to each student.
The theology faculty at Aquinas is united in its vision of the Church and her teachings. In accordance with the document Ex Corde Ecclesiae every teacher of theology has the Mandatum (official authorization) from the local bishop.

A Brief History of Aquinas College

Rooted in Catholic heritage, Aquinas College has a history founded on Dominican Tradition. Owned and administered by the Dominican Sisters of the of St. Cecilia Congregation, the history of the College actually began its remote preparation with the establishment of the Saint Cecilia Congregation in 1860 at the request of Nashville's second bishop, James Whelan, O.P. The College first began at the Motherhouse of the Sisters in 1928 as Saint Cecilia Normal School for the education of the Sisters to prepare them for their teaching apostolate. The school was affiliated with the Catholic University of America in 1929.
In 1961, the Saint Cecilia Normal School was replaced with Aquinas Junior College. Two significant milestones in the institution's history occurred at this point: the College was moved from Saint Cecilia Motherhouse to its present location on a beautiful 83 acre campus, and it was opened to the public. The first students registered were from nearby Saint Thomas Hospital School of Nursing.
In 1971, the College was granted accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate Degree. In 1994 Aquinas Junior College changed its status to a four-year college when approval was given to offer a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts (Teacher Education). Along with educating the young sisters of the Congregation, the College has provided area schools with lay teachers who have been prepared with a strong foundation professionally and spiritually.
Since its founding in 1961, the College has been alert to both the permanent and the changing needs of the Nashville community. Sensitivity to those needs and to the needs of the Church led to the establishment of the degrees that Aquinas offers. Today, Aquinas College has grown to a four-year institution excelling in the education of liberal arts students, future teachers, nurses and individuals in the field of business.
Aquinas College recognizes that its identity and mission spring Ex Corde Ecclesiae (From the Heart of the Church). The strategic plan of the College has recently articulated our Vision for the future: "In 2015, Aquinas College is nationally recognized as a model of Catholic liberal arts higher education."
