The State College of Design, Karlsruhe (hfg) was on 15 Opened in April 1992. It was with the Centre for Art and Media Technology (ZKM) in Karlsruhe during the years 1989 to 1992 by Prof. Dr. Heinrich Klotz founded. This unique combination of teaching, research and exhibition institutions established at the new artistic and pedagogical task on the media arts technology and electronic manufacturing processes related to the traditional.

The four programs include practice with a diploma from (Dipl.-Des.), The theory study art history and media theory with the Magister phil. The theory subjects art science and media theory and philosophy and aesthetics can continue to a doctorate (Dr. phil.). At the Karlsruhe College Bachelor-/Master-Studiengänge not be offered, and there's academic freedom non-modularised courses. For the students of the theory subjects, unlike in the universities, the choice of a computer science minor practice mandatory. The students practice the subjects are obliged to study a theory like drawer art history and media theory or philosophy and aesthetics as a minor.
For graduate students who have already obtained a degree at other universities, at the College of Design, a post-graduate degree program is in place, after concluding a three-semester-up studies with a certificate.
Prerequisite for admission to study is the general or technical university and the successful completion of an entrance examination.
The four practice courses HfG are permeable areas of study, the intensive relations allow to learn other subjects and, depending on the research and development focus of the participating professors different emphases. The media-analysis permeates the practice events, on the other hand, the media-art studies and training through an immediate practical concrete terms.
