Volda is the place you will never forget. We are situated on the north west coast of Norway, surrounded by spectacular fjords and mountains.Volda University College has approximately 3000 students, 150 academic staff, and about 60 technical and administrative staff. The college has long and proud traditions of higher education dating back to its foundation as a teachers’ training college established in 1895, now expanded to 4 faculties, 5 Master's Programmes, more than 30 undergraduate study programmes, and about 300 study courses offered.
Today Volda University College offers study programmes and courses in a wide variety of academic fields, administered by the Faculty of Humanities and Education, the Faculty of Social Sciences & History, the Faculty of Art and Physical Education and the Faculty of Media & Journalism. Volda University College is widely renowned for its outstanding academic studies in animation, broadcast journalism and documentary film production.
VUC is known also for its lively academic and social environment. Annual festivals at Volda University College have become nationally recognized, with the Documentary Film Festival in April as the main event.
Volda University College offers a great combination of a highly trained academic staff, with a small and inclusive learning environment. Below-average class sizes enable students to frequently interact with faculty members and administrative staff. In addition, Volda University College campus is compact with all school buildings in five minutes' walking distance from each other. At present, students from around 30 different countries are enrolled at Volda University College. We are preparing an alumni/network system that will enable you to keep in touch with student friends and the university college all your life. Good quality and reasonably priced student dorms are located within five minutes' walking distance from the campus.
Our home is Volda, but our perspective is international. Recognising that globalisation of communication, commerce and education is rapidly gathering pace, we are aiming to meet this challenge and explore the potential of learning without frontiers. Life long studies are therefore one of our main objectives, and we are working hard on making our courses more accessible, flexible and convenient. At the same time our strategy is not to become a very large academic institution, but to remain a high quality university college.
Volda is situated in the middle of the western coastline of Norway.
Volda is surrounded by Sunnmørsalpane, a chain of alpine mountain peaks, and is renowned for its beautiful scenery.
Volda muncipality has a population of about 8300, augmented by a student population of about 1500 during the academic year. Farming, fishing, forestry and aquaculture have traditionally been important occupations in Volda. In addition, the maintenance of lighthouses and navigation marks has provided a vital source of income in many of the smaller villages in the municipality. Today it is the large public sector institutions, the university college and the hospital, that are the biggest workplaces in the district.

It offers five Master's programmes, more than 30 undergraduate study programmes, and about 300 study courses. Nationally, Volda University College is perhaps best known for its journalism school, having educated many of the most important and influential journalists in Norway over the last thirty years.
Volda, a centre of culture
The centre of Volda is a charming district located right next to Volda Fjord. There are many old wooden structures here—both commercial and residential—but at the heart of it is a beautiful stone church. Long ago this area was known as Halkjesvika, and it has been continuously occupied for many centuries. The first written source that mentions the place is the saga by Snorre, in wich Halkjesvika is named in connection with the battle of Hjørungavåg in the year 988 A.D. There has been a church here since the Middle Ages.
Faculty of Arts and Physical Education
Being the institution between Bergen and Trondheim which offers the most extensive range of subjects and modules in the field, we focus in particular on the creative student who also wants practical competence with a solid academic base. At Volda University College you may study and combine subjects in drama and theatre, dance, sports and outdoor life, arts and crafts, media and information/communication technology, and music.
We are 40 staff and 400 students working with 5 different bachelor 's programmes, 9 year courses and several half-year courses, indepth as well as further studies. Productions and practice, such as performances, exhibitions, excursions, experiences, and work placement in schools and industry make up an important part of the programmes. The studies are targeted towards leisure, culture and working life, but also towards teacher education and work in primary, secondary school as well as in adult education.
The academic staff have their offices upstairs in the new wing of the Kaarstad building. The faculty has well equipped workshop and production facilities in the Kaarstad building as well as in the adjacent Sports Hall and Swimming Pool.

The Faculty of Humanities & Education is the largest faculty at Volda University College with approximately 1000 students and 85 staff members.
The Faculty of Humanities & Education offers programmes qualifying for professional work in pre-schools, primary and junior secondary schools. If you would like to work with children and youths, teacher education could be the professional career for you. Pedagogical work at the various levels of schooling requires teachers with a solid professional competence in a variety of fields.
The Faculty of Humanities & Education offers also study programmes within the disciplines of languages and literature. The main areas of research and education is English Language and Literature; History; and Norwegian/Nordic Studies. It incorporates its long traditions of teacher training with the perspectives of modern interactive teaching methods and ICT-based teaching to provide students the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in the education system.
Within the faculty we offer courses in linguistics, pedagogics, literature science, regional history, social studies, teaching secondary languages, and the link between language and literature.
In addition to the 4-year General Teacher Education Programme, the Faculty of Humanities and Education offers a number of subjects and subject areas of 30 and 60 ECTS credits, subjects that the students may choose as in-depth studies.
The Faculty of Humanities and Education has a 100 year-old tradition of teacher education. In 1895 Volda Teacher Training College was established, a college that later merged with the District College to form Volda University College. The aesthetically pictoresque main building (the Kaarstad Building) symbolizes the rich traditions on teacher education is built on. This building was constructed at a time when the College was the largest institution for teacher education in the Nordic countries. At present, students spend their time in modern and well-equipped facilities, tailored to the needs of the various subjects taught.
The Faculty of Humanities and Education has close ties to the Ivar Aasen Institute, and collaborates with this institute in offering the interdisciplinary Master's Programme in cultural studies.

The Faculty of Humanities and Education includes 35 academic and administrative staff. All staff offices of the faculty are located in the Berte Kanutte building. The courses offered through the faculty are organized within 3 departments: English Department, Nordic Department Insitute and Teacher training Department..
Social Sciences and History
The Faculty of Social Sciences & History offers professional qualification, continuing education, and single courses within social sciences, social work, history, public administration and planning. The Faculty is divided in the 3 departments, the Department for Social Work, the department of History and the Department for Public Administration and Planning.
Bachelor's programmes offered at the Faculty of Social Sciences & History (180 ECTS credits):
Social Work (This programme qualifies for social work in general; with individuals and groups and to administer social programmes).
Child Care (This programme qualifies for social and educational work with children, adolescents and their families who have social or personal difficulties, or are at risk of developing such difficulties).

In addition to these academic programmes, many popular in-service training and part time/distant courses are offered by the faculty; including modules in Crime Prevention, Management and Personnel Development, Problems of Drug and Substance Abuse, Pedagogy in the Public Health Sector, and Management in the Public Health Sector.
Approx. 40 academic and administrative staff members are connected to the faculty. The academic staff are specialized in a number of disciplines and takes part in a number of research and development projects.
Faculty of Media and Journalism
The Faculty of Media and Journalism sees its mission in line with fundamental democratic ideals and values. The programmes and courses offered through the faculty will prepare students for professional careers in media with a focus on information and public enlightening, societal criticism and the watch-dog functions of free societies. We wish to contribute to enhance the quality, knowledge level, and the diversty of opinions in the public discourse; aiming to bring attention to unacceptable situations and practices in society through the active utilization of the freedom of speech. These values will be reflected both in the core curriculum, syllabus, teaching methods, and through the active participation of faculty members in today's media-political debate.
Modern equipment and cutting edge technology provide the hardware for good learning environment in media studies. The Faculty of Media and Journalism aspires to be a leading institution with regards to equipment, technology, and production lines. Close connection with the Norwegian media industry and internship periods through the study programmes, provide for the students' networking opportunities with potential employers. The dynamic connection between theory and practice is essential in all educational programmes and courses offered through the Faculty of Media and Journalism.
During the internship and practical work periods of the courses students will participate in the running of various media sources at the Faculty of Media and Journalism. These media outlets are integral parts of the student-active teaching methods utilized in our courses. The students will be able to work with student radio, student TV, and a regional newspaper.
The Faculty of Media and Journalism offers Bachelor's Programmes in Journalism (major in TV, Radio and Print Journalism) and a Bachelor's Programme in Information and Media. In addition, the faculty offers a unique Animation Bachelor's Program. Films and comic strips from the animation section have won national and international recognition for its high academic and artistic standard. Other courses offered are Media Science, Media History, Documentary Film Making, Photography etc.
