The story of Coimbra University dates back to the century following the very foundation of the Portuguese nation, since the University was established in the thirteenth century, in 1290.
But first, in 1288, drew up a Prayer to Pope Nicholas IV (of which only knows the shuttle) dated November 17, 1288 and signed by the abbots of the monasteries of Alcobaça, Santa Cruz de Coimbra and S. Vicente de Lisboa and the top 24 churches and convents of the kingdom.

The University of Coimbra offers its more than 20,000 students a comprehensive set of undergraduate courses, postgraduate, master's, doctoral and specific training throughout life, with a high quality faculty of about 1,200 elements.
